Seng Huang Lee (‘92), an outstanding scholar and Dux of the College, has translated his international business success and passion for offshore racing into philanthropic support for Scots. Through his SHK Scallywag Foundation, he fully funded the Scots skiff squad's recent tour to the Asian 29er Championships in Hong Kong, giving the boys invaluable international racing experience and inspiring excellence both on and off the water.

Propelling Scots Sailors to the International Stage

The strength and depth of the Scots skiff sailing program has again been on display this season, highlighted by international competition opportunities made possible through the generosity of Old Boy Seng Huang Lee (‘92)

Earlier this year Six boys from the skiff squad recently travelled to Hong Kong to compete in the Asian 29er Championships, gaining invaluable international racing experience against top regional competition. This tour was fully funded through the support of Seng Huang Lee’s SHK Scallywag Foundation, whose generosity provided the sailors with exposure to world-class racing, new conditions, and the opportunity to further develop their skills on an international stage. The experience represents a significant milestone in the sailors’ development and underscores the importance of strong Old Boy connections in supporting high-performance pathways.

The Making of a Leader

As a boy at Bellevue Hill, Seng Huang Lee enjoyed an exceptional career at the College, marked by academic distinction and broad co-curricular involvement. He represented the School in 1st Shooting (1990–91), placed 2nd in GPS Shooting in 1991, and competed in GPS Debating in 1990. An outstanding scholar, Seng Huang was Dux of both the Preparatory School in 1986 and the College in 1992.

After dropping out of the University of Sydney after a year, where he studied Law and Commerce he went on to build an international business career. Since 2007, he has led Sun Hung Kai & Co. Ltd., guiding its evolution into a global investment group. He also serves as Executive Chairman of Mulpha International, whose Australian interests include the InterContinental Sydney, Sanctuary Cove Resort and Hayman Island Resort as well as Norwest Business Park.

His connection to offshore racing began in childhood, watching the fleet depart each Boxing Day for the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race. In 2016, he acquired the 100-foot supermaxi and established the SHK Scallywag campaign, which has since competed consistently at the highest level, including a 3rd Line Honours finish in the 2025 race. In 2017, he also backed the first Hong Kong entry in the Volvo Ocean Race, winning the Melbourne Hong Kong leg.

Broadening Access and Building Character

In 2019, Seng Huang established the SHK Scallywag Foundation to broaden access to sailing in Hong Kong and to challenge perceptions of the sport as inaccessible or elitist. The Foundation removes key barriers by fully funding participation for selected students and operates a “one-for-one” sponsorship model, whereby each privately funded participant enables another young person from a disadvantaged background to take part.

Importantly, the Foundation supports students beyond introductory experiences, funding talented sailors for progression into the Scallywag Development Squad and providing some with a potential vocational pathway within the maritime industry — reflecting Seng’s belief in sailing as a formative and character-building pursuit.

Through the vision and generosity of Old Boys like Seng Huang Lee, Scots sailors are not only gaining world-class experience but are also inspired to pursue excellence on and off the water.
